A Letter to you from the Owner
When we found this old stone house we didn’t know of its lineage to early Ellicott City founders and builders but were immediately intrigued by its structure – its bones – and fascinated by its potential.
In 1992 we originally started with three very basic apartments. Getting a sense of what a unified house would look like took some time. We learned after our two-phase renovation in 1992 and 1994 that the parcel’s ownership goes back to George Ellicott and is shown in a map from 1873 as “Mrs. Timanus House”. Its construction goes back to Charles Timanus, who built the Howard County Courthouse, Jail, and Patapsco Female Institute. Our renovation sought to reveal stone and brickwork, rebuild what was absent, open the house back to its former self as a single residence, and adding modern conveniences and flow.
We want to take this opportunity to thank you for considering 8471 Hill Street as your future home. We would like to share a few things about why we love living here, and why we’ll miss this town and home after relocating.
The quiet privacy of Hill Street offers a wonderful setting to enjoy all the area has to offer. Both the house and the historic town it sits above are special, offering the perfect blend of privacy and proximity. Over the years as stewards of this house, we have added our personal touches, always trying to enhance and never compete with this landmark place. Despite the town’s recent challenges, Ellicott City’s sense of community and purpose is as strong and vital as ever, with the promise of new resilience coming from the County’s commitment and Ellicott City Flood Mitigation Plan.
Living in this home, in this town, has been a wonderful experience. Along with its strong sense of place comes the energy of a vibrant neighborhood in all seasons.
Music and arts festivals from Spring thru Fall bring the bustle of festgoers and live music. December’s Midnight Madness brings the best of the season to town and, to us, signals the start of the holidays.
During non-fest times there are so many easy adventures which have become favorite pastimes: whether wandering into town for dinner, picking up a bottle of wine, chatting with shopkeepers in town, or stopping for a coffee on the way to stroll the Trolley Trail – this home offers it all. There’s no better way to close a day of adventure than to sit outside to birdwatch from the back porch, listen to the spring peepers at dusk, and hear the owls hooting at night.
We have loved living here. Should you be the new homeowners of 8471 Hill Street, we know you will love and care for it as we have for the last twenty-six years.
Mike and Adrian
